My N800 has Evince, Xournal, and PDF Reader installed. When a PDF is added Evince opens but doesn't display anything. Xournal doesn't see the PDF. PDF Reader gets an internal error when asked to open with no file selected.

Does naybody have any idea what the common thread might be that keeps all applications from opening a PDF??

Have you tried loading a PDF from within Evince's own menu?

When I try to open while in Evince Evince closes. I have just selected 'open' but have not selected a pdf yet.

Xournal does the same.

PDF Reader does the same except it displays an application error must close message.

I have a similar situation when I try to change my background image. As soon as I select 'browse' the application closes. Applets open on the desktop are no longer there. I must either select them again or power off/on.

Don't know if they are related.

Sounds like your system's borked to me. Unfortunately I have no idea as to what may be the cause.

All I know is that
  1. it's normal that evince won't open a PDF when launched as a default application from the file browser; you have to open the files manually from within evince.
  2. evince 0.9.0-0indt1 is running fine here on an N800 with OS 2007 4.2007.38-2.

Actually, is there a technical reason why Evince behaves this way? I recall Gnumeric and a few other apps have this problem as well.

I really can't imagine how this could be considered normal, instead of a critical usability bug that needs to fixed asap... It's pretty awful that instead of one tap you need at least 5 taps and a dozen wasted seconds just to open one file.
