I've been getting this error since yesterday evening, first I was unable to see who's online on facebook via my contacts list, then when I swicted to view "Most Recent" the entire app closed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

SOLUTION: Remove extended-contacts-search plugin or just type in the letter of the name you're looking for from the desktop, example "a"

first of all try to make a backup using the backup tool of maemo, because this kind of problems usually can result on a corrupt file system that required reflash the phone.

I recommend to you this because it is the best way to store calendar information, IM messaging, sms, contacts and bookmarks.

The other things you can keep them manually.

After making a backup of everything you can, then try a fsck from backupmenu or from linux live cd using the USB mass storage access option of backupmenu.

you too can make a backup from backupmenu which will serve you to know how many errors does your system files, sometimes you might some file, relating to the application of the telephone, is damaged and you do happen.

I just I just tell you my personal experience.

Thank you, so how should I go about fixing the issue, you told me that making a backup is always a good idea but I only have the backups made from using the n900 backup app. Is this the app you are referring to?

    And how do I fsck?

I need a step by step

The best way to know if your file system have problems is try the backup using backupmenu, if you get many errors when running the backup then your file system have problems.
