Although since I have all the needed files... and Linux... so I might do it anyway... I should be able to reflash back to OS2007 before the trip. Or I could just wait... ... ... NAH.
Any reasons NOT to install OS2008 to the SD card and leave the OS2007 on the "normal" flash memory? The only "bad" thing about this is I would be getting more speed from the non-compressed file system on the SD card AND also from OS2008... so it would be REALLY fast compared to OS2007. (And since I've not done 2007 to SD I wouldn't be able to tell the difference because of OS2008.)

Ive installed RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM on my n800.
It comes with xterm and Perl 5.8.3 pre-installed.
Everything seems faster.
Liking the UI.

Perhaps Nokia is keeping this ability in reserve for a future "Look what we did" release. Kind of like the benefits from OS2008 on the N800.
edit: This would make sense from a marketing and development viewpoint in that Nokia wishes to keep the development team minimal at this time... ramping up later when needed.

If they are from a new repo your N8x0 will prompt to add the new one (you can click No to the install prompt if you dont wsnt the orogram and the repo will still be added)
