Well 300 million is for meego AND QT development. And the key word is relative as in relative to 1+ billion spent solely on symbian

I suppose MeeGo is still some kind of future plan for Nokia, but probably coming months will tell how much money they are going to give it.
Quick question, why did Nokia choose to go to MS when the biggest gainers in percentage use Android?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to use Android in the short term while polishing the Meego ui? this way Nokia keeps it's promises to Meego partners and customers. Would have helped their sales an reputation much more than the NoWin idea..

Maemo while good was quite rough in a lot of areas that would matter to general consumers. Nokia was right to not push it in my opinion. Meego is what they moved to to get the polish for consumers so they wouldn't be taking the go it alone approach.

Just curious on how you thought they could they get meego ready in less then a 1 year time period? MS spent over a year on WP7 and don't really have it complete yet...

What nokia was supposed to be doing is restructuring and reallocating resources to get a solid foundation for going full boar into the smartphone market. I think they panicked and pulled out too quick without leaving any other options on the table. That's a problem for a company.

Qt was a big part of Symbian and MeeGo. That makes the math a bit harder. Since MeeGo isn't out, I'd just go ahead (personally) and clump it into the Symbian fund until MeeGo comes out.

That's just my take. Feel free to think otherwise.

Rooted and system dumped and rooted reported here too... Designgears is the one that did it (follow him on Twitter) and custom firmware forthcoming.

And when it does, I might rethink moving to it.

Maemo has been around for a while. So has Moblin. Neither not being ready anytime soon makes it look... well, not feasible that it would have ever come.

Because you don't tend to announce your new OS strategy unless you are close(r) to a finished product. That was not the case. Nokia released the N900, a few months (3 perhaps?) they announced the strategic combination with Intel for MeeGo, and nothing.

A year later, I expected to see more than "it's coming". I have to keep repeating on this forum ad infinitum for the semantic lovers that I wanted to see a finalized UI and/or different piece of hardware than the N900 for the MeeGo platform. Otherwise, they'd just say "install it as it is... it's open source" which is, while practically correct, it is not officially supported nor finished, with any apps, with no vendor apps announced.

That's a problem. WP7 wasn't even out and they had shown off the Twitter app, the browser, announced who was making apps for it, shown off the other apps for it - MS Office for instance - and it wasn't even out.

You can't find anything like that other than the browser for MeeGo. Perhaps a few scroll list renderers and some other stuff. Not exactly what I'd call compelling. Show me vendors, show me something more concrete. Hell, to get it to even make phone calls, that was a problem for a while.

Well ... there were a number of Maemo devices (N770 ... N900) sold by Nokia - over the years, but without love and without being comitted to that OS.

And I remember, Nokia will deliver a Meego device THIS YEAR.
And WP7 later, next year - maybe. It would not be the first time such projects are delayed. And first WP7 phones won't be a good one I guess due to lack of experience.

Oops... I linked to rooted. Digging through the Twitter logs to just find this: bootloader is encrypted, Motorola are liars because earlier Motorola had announced that the bootloader was open.

It's not. I misspoke earlier it seems.

Nokia never that I am aware of announced any long term strategy with maemo, I may be wrong on this but if they did it would have been well over 3 years ago.

And anything written for S3 in QT would run on meego, how much is that I don't know but I'll look it up later. Also there is the WeTab that is meego based.

The dumb thing that happened is the Meego 1.0 release, it gave everyone the wrong impression that it was ready or soon ready. But if you went to the meego site you would see no, it wasn't that was only the core. In fact even with 1.1 it says it is only complete for core and notebook hand held is just a technology snapshot. 1.2 is what is complete for handsets and IVI. And 1.3 is suppose to complete it for tablets. So really they would have been best off to leave the 1.0 mark for what they will be calling 1.2 or 1.3. That was a bad choice for everyone.
