I haven't done any development stuffs and am hoping to avoid it. I'm trying to keep my N900 working for at least another 3 years
But from what I understand from your suggestion, should I try uninstalling the most recent applications instead?
I doubt removing the applications will help - most of them don't undo any customisation you've set within the application. Have you installed anything to modify/customise the N900 (provide extra desktops, rotation options, desaturate instead of blur, etc)? You could also check what the content of the file is (cat /etc/apt/preferences) which may provide some info on what's behind it.

The last app I installed was Love Meter Maemo through Ovi Store...which I uninstalled the same day after seeing it was useless.
I tried to install Sphyro and it shows downloaded, but error to install (application pack not found). I tried with another app and it just shows the same error. In Ovi Store, the status shows downloaded.
I recall this operation error occured before last time and it got resolved on its own. I hope this is the same situation. But any suggestion would be very much appreciated.
I was also having same problem but yesterday i used
apt-get autoremove
i got list of package not being used and an warning that autoremove has done some error so i used
apt-get remove (package name which was shown using earlier command)
omg i can't believe i didn't try that..... i restored my phone to original settings, and searched countless other forums until i got to this one. thank you =)
