hi there lately i have been getting various messages that the file is a read only file and can't use it or delete it or save or edit it... for example when i was using transmission the download would start downloading and all of a sudden stop and give me an error saying its only a read only file... also when i tried to edit a picture and rotate it and save it as something else it says cannot save its a read only file... in file manager when i try to delete some items it says cannot delete it is a read only file... I DONT KNOW WHAT I DID AND WHY IT IS ACTING UP LIKE THIS. TRANSMISSION APPLICATION FREEZES WHEN I'M RUNNING WITH WITH THE WEB AND I ALWAYS HAVE TO RESET IT... IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I'D GREATLY APPRECIATE IT. I MIGHT HAVE TO HARD RESET MY DEVICE. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO RESET MY DEVICE TO FACTORY SETTINGS SO I CAN GET IT AS IT WAS NEW??????//

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPORT

Look like several solutions: one short term and one long term.
    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37056 recommend:
2 reboots (probably it will check and fix vfat) or manually fix vfat:
    1. reboot
    2. open x-term
    3. type root (you will need rootsh package from Extras)
    4. type umount /home/user/MyDocs
    5. type fsck -a /dev/mmcblk0p1
    6. reboot

Long term is converting vfat in ext3. ext3 is more stable system.

I realized that it is Transmission that is causing this issue.

I am able to replicate this error by opening up Transmission and start downloading a torrent. Once it starts downloading from peers, it gives me that error.

Even after 2 reboots, I am able to save and delete files but once I start up Transmission again the same thing happens.

The version of Transmission I am currently using is 1.76-1maemo0

you're right, it is transmission. i had the same problem, all of my files would be set as read only. if i tried to delete the offending torrent download files via file manager everything would be set as read only and i had to power off my phone and remove the batt to get everything back in order. the way i found to remove the files was to connect my n900 to my pc and delete them while the phone is in mass storage mode via windows. never had this problem before the last update. im holding off using transmission until its next update, then ill give it another go

is it possible to simply connect the device to a linux pc and format the internal memory to ext3? Or is it safe? Because it will be much simple then commands via therminal. (sorry if posted in wrog section)

Scooty.. just 3 notes above yours mikhmv links to a thread that has everything you need to make the internal ext3.

You can either run those via SSH in a linux terminal, if you don't wanna do it in the n900 terminal, or convert some of those commands to using whatever path and device your linux host see's when you plug it in.

As long as you get a device name for /dev/mmcblk0 on your computer when you plugin via USB you could use gParted to format it for all it matters.. you'll just lose data if you don't backup.. and if you don't pay close attention to what you're doing you could potentially re-partition or reformat a device you didn't *intend* to..

I don't know if the "root" device mounts on Linux (I would doubt it..) - but if it does you could completely wipe your phone and have to reflash.

transmission isn't really working on this device. u want to try ctorrent and the flashlite patch. It can't read udp and dead tracker atm but u can solve this by editing the torrent with www.torrenteditor.com. also u want to tweak nr_requests of the filesystem to optimize throughput or bandwith and not the speed of the filesystem. u want to search for the user nightfire who posts a solution to massive optimize throughput in demanding i/o situations. u want to try my tune-up tools too because it do a similar thing.
