Hey guys.
So im in Canada and we have a new wireless provider Called WIndmobile .. Long story short.
They support 1700 and 2100 . whenever i use my data (e.g surfing)
it sometimes switches from 3G to 3.5G .. and when is in 3.5 the data speed increases by quite a bit but then it goes back to 3G .. so like .. it switches back and forth =/

is there a way to make it stay at 3.5G when using data and 3G the other times? (btw they dont support GSM, so im forced to be on 3g all the time)

thanks a lot

This is not a problem with N900. It switches because of low signal. You could call 3G a fallback mode. If you would fix it to 3.5G half of the time your N900 would be "no signal"

As far as I know 3.5G simply means that HSDPA is active, and this happens on-demand, so it's normal that depending on the activity currently going on the phone/operator (both in combination) will assign more or less channels as they see fit.

Once the traffic goes down (or stops) the 3.5G disappears and goes back to 3G.

3.5G utilises a lot more bandwidth, as it is downloading data at a faster rate. If customers were able to fix their phones at 3.5G, congestion would be a far greater issue than it already is for most carriers. As such, this is not a feature that can be decided by the end user.

Every carrier has different policies and thresholds for 3g to 3.5g to 3g switching. Also the amount of time it takes to switch between 3g and 3.5g varies between operators.

One trick some people use, is to keep a ping active. Might need -s 500 or 1400 depending on operator. Warning: keeping phone on 3.5g will use enormous amounts of power.
