Hello all,

I am a new user of N900, and I have been having a lovely time since I laid my hands over this device One of the killer features for me is the terminal and everything I can do with it, but I am having difficulties when using applications that work through a console user interface.

The specific problem is that I am not able to access the menus in the top of the console user interface, the ones that are usually accessed using the "Alt-x" combination, where x is any key (for example, usually "Alt-F" is the combination that opens the file menu).

Is there any way to achieve what I want?

Thanks for the help!

the Esc on the terminal toolbar should act as Alt in terminal apps I think.

Hmmm, apparently "Esc" works as the escape key (cancels commands).

EDIT: as a clarification, this is what I am trying to use: http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...6/ht/2.0.14-1/

I thought all terminal apps interpret Esc followed by letter, as Alt+letter? Also I thought Alt key + letter if used in terminal, just sends Escape sequence + letter anyway. What specific application are you having problems with?

The application is the HT editor:

why runs fine otherwise but the for the fact that I cannot access the menus.

I have run Ht editor on my computer and used the Esc+letter to get the menu, so it should really work with the toolbar Esc, though I don't have time to install it and try right now on the n900. Maybe latter I'll have time. The toolbar Esc is sticky, so you shouldn't need to hold it down with the letter, try press and release Esc toolbar, then hit the letter key.

Hmm... the "esc" button in the toolbar does not seem to be sticky... ctrl is sticky. Anyway, it does not seem to work - I wonder if there is something strange going on: I am surprised you mention a standard button being sticky while it is not for me.

The Ctrl toolbar is locked, it stays on till turned off, Esc toolbar is sticky, it stays on only for next keypress and then goes off (though it doesn't indicate this visually on the toolbar). Not sure what the problem is with ht editor, maybe something needed to be changed to it from diablo maemo 4 release, I know I used it on my n810 and don't remember having any problems, the n810 had no Alt key or, in diablo an Alt toolbar. I'll probably check it out on both devices later tonight and get back with any info.

Ok got out my n810 and ht was still installed, and that doesn't work with the terminal toolbar Esc, but the n810 had one hardware key that gave Escape sequence as well, and that does works. So my guess on the n900 if you remap your keyboard to have a key combination for Escape sequence, it should work.

This website for emacs on the n900 has instructions on remapping Fn+Left Arrow to Esc as well as Fn+Right arrow for Tab, I did this for emacs, but mostly I run emacs in terminal and just use Esc toolbar for Alt/Meta in terminal emacs.

All right, that sounds like it could to the trick... And incidentally, emacs is the next on my list of programs to install. Will try this and post the results so that it stays as a reference.

Thanks!
