It doesn't work(woops it does), just got my n900 back early from my boyfriend and tried it, with no luck with keyboard remapping, maybe it doesn't like a two keypresses for Esc?, or maybe it needs something modified for n900?, it's from the older diablo repository, not really sure. Most other terminal apps I've used work fine with Esc on toolbar for Alt.

edit to add

Ok it works but you have to be very fast on the seqeunce of keys. Maybe it would be better for this app to have a single key Esc. Instead using the proper sticky key, wait for next keypress, it must just wait a certain amount of time instead.

Also the Esc toolbar does work as well, but needs very fast sequence.

Also just a warning, that a long hardware keypress of Escape will close the terminal(or any other application, so it can also be usefull). I assume this is a hangover from the n8x0 that had a button on the front that was used to go back in the browser or dialog, give the Escape sequence, and on long holds, close the current application.

You are absolutely right, being fast is the key. However, this does not help much. The interface is broken in so many ways that is unusable: enter does not work, functions keys are unreachable and so on. I guess that this application would need more rework, to turn it into an mc-like experience.

Does anyone know if there is a tutorial to perform these kind of conversions?

Enter is broken in the standard Nokia distro, but fixed in CSSU - pressing it when editing a new text file in hte seems to work OK on my N900.
Function keys, Alt and anything else you need can be added to the softkey toolbar at the bottom of xterm with the help of this thread on keymapping.
