When using an external data entry method such as a usb keyboard or x11vnc you need to switch the input method. The following command will let you use the keyboard as expected.
Code:
maemo-gtk-im-switch xim
And this will set it back to normal.
Code:
maemo-gtk-im-switch osso-input-method
Thanks Johnpad, this is exactly how I need gnumeric to work with a BT keyboard. Now I just need to learn how to write a script automatically start gnumeric in this mode.

You mean there's always overpriced BT keyboards!

I use a BT keyboard (on an N800) and it works. Of course, my keyboard has an F2. :P

It's a Palm diptych, built solid, nearly full-pitch, has function keys overlaid on top row of number keys. Oh, and it's only $64.

If you want to spend/waste a lot less than $120:

I bought it there, with google checkout, no rip-off.

It is available for slightly less at the Palm Store.

Are you able to input foreign characters with the keyboard as is, or do you have the usual problem that a suitable keyboard mapping is missing on the nokia IT?

I have no need, at present, to try inputting foreign characters. But I'll bet I'd have such trouble. If you can get xmodmap working, you should be able to establish a suitable map with it. I've seen some references to xmodmap on ITs. Here at least: http://maemo.org/community/wiki/HowTo_SetupKeyboard, but I think that's all regarding a 770.
