Found the problem.

i had to find out why it did this so i started again but decided to leave out the -R when flashing which ment that it did not reboot and i could go straight onto the emmc and worked perfectly first time!

Yes you're not meant to reboot between flashing the firmware and emmc!

While we're on the topic, can someone tell me what to flash first? The firmware or emmc? I've flashed 4 times in the past but i've read two guides saying different things and i've forgotten what i did in the past.

Here's what I understood when I recently ran into problems flashing the N900.

After flashing the fiasco, some of the libraries and binaries are moved to /opt. This happens every time, but only on the FIRST reboot, If you never flash the emmc, you never notice this happening, besides a longer first boot.

However flashing the emmc wipes out /opt. Now the order in which you flash the fiasco or emmc doesn't matter as long as you do not reboot in between, since they only interact on that first reboot.

If you do reboot between flashes, there are two scenarios. Fiasco -> reboot -> emmc leaves you with an empty /opt and the N900 stops working. Emmc -> reboot -> fiasco still leaves you with an empty /opt temporarily, and the N900 may fail to boot properly, but flashing the fiasco last fixes /opt.

The irony is that fiasco -> reboot -> emmc can be fixed by fiasco -> reboot -> emmc -> reboot (or not) -> fiasco. In other words, the flashing the fiasco first and then rebooting counts for nothing except make newbies like me pull their hair for no reason.

Am I making any sense?
