The port had come broken out with the usb charger while trying to disconnect, but thankfully the device was still under warranty and Nokia guys fixed it for me......

Well I found a N900 that was working for cheap and ahve been enjoying it even started working on scratchbox. A few weeks later it falls with the charger in and breaks off the charge port before I had gotten around to opening and properly reinforcing the solder job, just as feared. Thanks to good documentation here I was able to solder it back down, scraped the ground area and enlarged the solder footprint too, the power/data pads just let go so it was not too hard to fix.
Everything works as well as it did but now my h-e-n USB host cable or something related no longer works, nothing, not even the LED on my flash drive when I hit V-boost. I can USB slave just fine and read/write is great when I use the phone as a portable drive.
I have ordered a better microUSB port with longer legs off of ebay to replace the wobbly and weak stock one from Nokia.

Did you get a new N900 set or did they replace the PCB/USB on your current phone?

I got pissed off, but calming down right now.

In my device USB got loose, so I sended for repair less than two weeks ago.

Today I asked what's going on. I got report from service that Nokia is replacing it with retail packed N8, which is kind of successor for N900 (say what?), and N8 is already on it way to me.

For my luck, with two phone calls I got N8 replaced back to (brand new, I hope) N900. This is definitely last Nokia branded phone which I bought. I really hope MeeGo gets it wings with Intel/ZTE/non-Nokia manufacturer.

    Howdy,

I got a little over a year's use out of my n900 when I stopped being able to charge the device through the USB port. The port seems to have physically come loose inside the phone, but hasn't completely detached. I've read a few forums and it seems this is a relatively common problem.

I am trying to send the phone in for repair, but Nokia has suggested I call a specific number to find a quote on the repair cost. Unfortunately, after a couple days of calling and leaving messages, I've had no response.

I wasn't able to cast my vote on the poll, so I thought I'd post my experience. I'm hoping to get the phone fixed and in usable state - it's just a dead brick right now but there's nothing wrong other than the USB port. Any recommendations?

Phone still under warranty so I'll give Nokia a chance to sort it.
Just to update - I sent the phone back to Nokia UK and it was returned fully repaired exactly one week later. Screen is mine, but the internals are new (different IMEI number now). Can't tell if the keyboard was replaced (as I rarely use it anyway).

Used the NokiaCare home collection and delivery service and made a point of stressing in my email to them that this was a known problem with this phone - used the phrase "Inherent design fault known about by Nokia" IIRC. And it certainly seemed to work.

    Well chuffed!
