1. Open backup application (it's in application menu)

2. Create new copy, when it asks you what to copy select just "Communication and calendar"

3. After creating backup copy open terminal

4. Type
Code:
rm -rf .rtcom-eventlogger
5. Reboot your phone.

6. Open backup application and restore your last backup which you made just few minutes ago.

7. Reboot your phone once again

This solution should keep the same amount of messages and calls from the past as ktchiu's suggestion, but my option needs only typing one command in terminal, rest are programs with graphical user interface.
ok so when I type that one command, I press enter after? and then close terminal and turn off my phone and turn it back on? I'm creating a back up right now

yes, you type: rm [space] -rf [space] .rtcom-eventlogger [enter] (note there is [dot] in front of rtcom-eventlogger) and when it finishes (new line will appear in terminal), you close terminal and reboot your phone.

Were you able to see messages in conversations app properly? It's strange... if it won't finish in next 15 minutes, it may not work at all (and to stop this hangup backup process you may need to reboot). Then you can only try what ktchiu suggested (more terminal commands) if you want to keep any information, if that wouldn't work either, you may need to type "my" command "rm -rf .rtcom-eventlogger" which will wipe all conversations and incoming/outgoing calls...

Do you remember after what event it disappeared? Any sudden reboot, call from strange number, Skype hangup, software update...? Or it just happened out of nowhere?

Happy to read that No, it affects only sms and IM chat messages and your phone calls (it wipes information used by apps "Conversations" and "Phone", any other data remains unaffected)

hmmm don't know the reason, could be some update for app that I installed. Just today I deleted most of the apps, but still call log is empty. My conversations app is weird. It sometimes disappears...but lately it's been running fine. However, for 3 of my contacts it shows as unread and when I try to open it, it won't let me read any of their messages, nor will it let me delete their message thread.

Right now it's 100% backed up, but it's been stuck like that for 5 mins now. I have the option to stop it, but nothing else. I'll wait and see what it does.

If there are also conversations which cannot open, as you wrote, than no suprise backup is running so slow After you complete all operations suggested by me the ones which could not open will be probably deleted anyway. Just be patient with this backup and later with restoring. I'm going offline now, but will for sure come back to this thread tommorow, so don't forget to report later if everything went fine. Goodnight (4:52 AM here)
