Hi.

I'm trying to copy files on my mmc card (kingston 2G mmc Mobile).

I plug it into an SD card reader
Hook it up to a Ubuntu system (SuSE 10.1 for some reason cannot see it at all).
FlashDisk appears, is auto-mounted, and I can read files in it.
FlashDisk is write protected, though, and for the life of me, I was unable to change this.
Was also unable to format the card.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is it maybe because I need to use a special mmc-mobile reader rather than the SD reader?

From the lack of threads on the subject, I presume there is something simple I'm missing in all this.

Thanks

Sorry, also, the reason why I want to copy data directly on the card from a card reader, is because I cannot copy large files to the card when it is plugged into the PC. Both Linux and Windows.
In Linux, the 'cp' command simply hangs. Konqueror gives a message that the process is 'stalled'...

Thanks

What filesystem is on it?
I run Fedora 7 on my PC and have my 2GB card partitioned with a 128MB FAT32, two 300MB ext3 partitions for OS2006 and OS2007HE and an extended partition with a 700MB ext3 partition for general storage and the rest, (about 140MB) as a swap partition. It all works pretty well. When I plug the card into a card reader, Fedora mounts all the partitions (except the swap of course) to /media
All partitions are read/write. I boot 95% of the time into the OS2007HE on the MMC and I have an almost virgin install of 2007HE on the internal flash with just root access and ssh installed. If something goes wrong with my experiments on the mmc I can just copy the internal flash back to the MMC and start again. I have the FAT partition mounted at /media/mmc1, the storage partition at /media/mmc2 and the "other OS" at media/mmc3 and the internal flash at /media/mmc4. Works for me.

OK, great, thanks for the reply.

Are you using an SD card reader to read the MMC card?
Have you tried to copy files to the MMC card while its in the n770 via a USB connection? If so, do you have problems with data Xfer speeds?
How did you format the MMC card? Does Fedora have a formatting utility?

When I tried to format my mmc cards with the formatting tool from Ubunty's Feisty, I got an error...

cheers?

I use gparted or qtparted. They're partition editors. Ubuntu should have those. Do this in the card reader.

Yes, I've written to the card both ways, directly in a card reader and in the 770 via a usb cable. But when I'm lazy (most of the time) I just use scp to copy files over the wifi connection. (must have openssh installed)

Can't answer the other questions unfortunately, only this one: You should be able to use your SD card reader just fine, particularly if it's also an MMC card reader (never heard of any that wasn't).

I long suspected that ssh's remote file copying utility would work fine, but you have just confirmed it.

I tried to use scp, but... the 53Mb file I tried to copy caused the cp to freeze after 25Mb or so. I'll let it work overnight, but even it does manage to work, its' waaayy too slow. This is similar behaviour to nfs, and even the USB connections are pretty slow (when they work).

Regarding formatting the mmc card, I still cant seem to be able to format my 2nd mmc-mobile card. The error windows gives me is 'the drive is read only'. Ubuntu gives the same complaint.

Is there something I can do to unlock the mmc card to r/w, if it is a prermissions issue?

Thanks

Update: I was able to format the 2G mobile MMC card, simply by taking it to a friend's PC (who has a different reader than mine). Subsequently, I got a new reader, and the card reads fine on my linux system (SuSE 10.1), except that if the file is big (500+Mb), it will stall and take a very long time to copy. Not sure if conventional zip drives exhibit the same characteristics.

Thanks again for the replies.
