Errors trying to update repositories - HELP! - in fact no internet connectivity

Hi all,

New to the N900 so please be gentle!
I went into my application manager to update the repositories and it hung so went into xterm and through sudo gainroot typed in

apt-get update

I am constantly getting the message back;

Temporary failure resolving 'repository.maemo.org'
Ign https://downloads.maemo.nokia.com ./ translation-en_GB

The lines (plus a few others) keep coming up and the %age figure is going up very slowly (at 18% after about 30 minutes)

This is after a fresh flash as I wanted to clean everything up having just bought the N900.

Can anyone help?

***EDIT*** now noticed that I can't browse the web either or sync email. What's going on? I tried both cellular data and wifi connections but still no joy.
