Yeah, but since we only have it for Extras, extras corresponds more closely to testing and extras-devel to unstable.

As for what Nokia does internally with OS releases, IDK.

I guess I know what you're saying... but is there any chance for something like Xournal to advance from extras (testing) to stable (??).

I'd love to track testing, as I do on Debian, but to do that now I have to selectively install things from -devel and disable it for everything else... you know what I mean.

Who broke my Xournal?

I've installed version 4.2.1 since I flashed my n810 with diablo - it worked all OK.
Then I've upgraded, installed many things etc.
Now xournal is broken, I can't select tool/eraser/highlighter from menu bar at the bottom - looks like selected but no action - previous tool is still active.
When I close app it closes but in fact it's still working in background (I can see 'autosave' message).
Starting it from console gives some clues, what can I do? I've tried reinstall, purging etc:

Probably you've got Diablo's Extras-Devel enabled. That caused the devel version of Xournal to be installed.

Try disabling it, deleting Xournal and re-installing it.

As for extras=testing I don't agree with you guys.
Maemo extras is for developer's (non nokia) software. And it should be stable.
Xournal in extras is stable.

Not in the Debian sense; in Debian, it's not stable till it's fossilized, cryogenically frozen, and placed in a stasis field.

Seriously, in my understanding, packages in stable will not be upgraded unless a security problem is found; maybe someone who knows Debian proccesses can correct me.

True, but I do not pack Xournal for Debian and I do not follow all of their guidelines.
