I was saddened deeply when these items were removed... I really liked that feature.

bergie: were you afraid of pictures and video of spam and porn being tagged "maemo" and showing up in the Social News system?

The problem was more about frequent lack of actual relevance combine with high frequency. For instance, someone could upload 17 screenshots in a simple go to Flickr - all tagged "maemo". How relevant that was for maemo.org/news... not sure but in many cases not much.

I remember now the case with videos. Many times someone would upload a video to YouTube tagged "maemo" and then would publish a blog post with the video embedded, resulting in practical terms in a double entry.

Could there not be some sort of filter against duplicates? Just wondering... Seems like we're already getting plenty of dupes with multiple people posting about the exact same thing.

There is no simple way to detect duplicates automatically, leave alone to discern the original or first source from the rest.

Therefore we are left to community/crowd edition evaluation with thumbs up/down.

Almost seems like Planet needs a sandbox too, eh? Just a joke. But, Planet is sort of a sandbox for /news, so... Shouldn't we just trust the crowd for photos and videos too?

Honestly, I don't remember how much "trash" was coming through Planet when we had the feature.

Probably not too useful to keep discussing this, except that I'm curious, so I won't expect much more.

I might be wrong but those vids and pics didn't go through Planet but through dedicated sources to maemo.org/news

Maybe the Planet sandbox idea is good (seriously!) but it's going too far from the topic of this thread.

Maybe we could have a user-driven duplicate detection - for example have a 'dupe' button (in addition to thumbs up and thumbs down), the main difference that if something get sufficient 'dupe' clicks (say, more than t-ups and at least 5), it actually disappears (unlike t-down which just buries it in the main page). I know, brainstorm...

There are now some ideas about how to bring maemo.nokia.com and the community services on maemo.org closer together in Brainstorm: maemo.org and maemo.nokia.com content sharing.

Would be great to have more solutions and feedback there

I just volunteered to take this task in the November sprint. http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo.org_prop...ew_.26_Renewed

If someone wants to start throwing ideas please create a new thread and I'll follow.
