Why would you run Ubuntu on a Windows XP machine, and not the Windows XP installer that Nokia provides? Seems like more effort than needed?

may be he doesn't want to install the .NET framework.
Like me.. I'm stuck between two machines (my Mac and my brother's PC running XP) and I can't upgrade my Nokia 770!!!
I can't install the .NET framework (as I can't reboot my brother's machine) and I can't use my Mac to flash...
Unbelievable..

I can't even run Linux on my Mac as the Linux version of the flasher has been compiled on a X86 and my Mac is a PPC.

In my situation, I had somehow bricked my 770. When I first bought my 770 in April, I had to flash it with the most recent update, and I used XP. For the 2006 beta, I successfully used the Mac OS X flasher. But when I tried flashing the new 2006 OS two days ago, I ignored the release notes and tried both XP and OS X flashers and ended up with a tablet that XP wouldn't recognize at all, and that OS X said had an unusable USB board (or something like that).

So, my only hope at that point was to find a way to install Linux on one of my machines so I could try flashing it that way.

Running Ubuntu from a LiveCD is a little elaborate, I'll agree, but in my case it was my only hope for restoring my 770.

Yep... been a few days now... very disappointed that I cannot flash my 770 with the new update. Sure, I was able to flash the beta... I almost went out after work today and bought the WillCom Zero3 (I'm in Japan) running Windows Mobile 5.0. Sure, it runs Windows Mobile, but... Very conflicting thoughts here. We'll see how long it takes to get a flasher out. Nokia must realize that a fair number of their audience may not be Windows users... or am I wrong?! I wonder how many Linux and OS X users are out there?

Andrew... are you in any way related to God? Thanks for your efforts and great programming skills. I just finished flashing my 770 via the Mac Flasher and your GUI. It worked flawlessly. Its good to know that there are concerned folks in our little community.

Thanks again for your dedication...

Just finished doing a backup from the card... and "everything" restored completely. Background image, color theme, contacts, presence, the whole enchilada!
