I don't know of free access, but for some time now I've been splashing out on news.individual.net's service at the princely sum of €10 per year. They only carry text newsgroups (25,000 of them), and do a pretty good job of spam filtering (especially against some of the recent attempts to flood groups like rgr.nethack).

+1 on someone porting a newsreader.

you might check your ISP many of them include USENET access with your account. Some folks don't think of that though.

Claws-Mail has NNTP-Support, it is working fine here (just reading 5-10 low-traffic newsgroups on the N810).

You can get it from:

http://www.claws-mail.org/maemo/

.install-File: http://www.claws-mail.org/maemo/claws-mail.install

What do you mean exactly?

As far as i know, Claws-Mail works perfectly in parallel with the original mail application, but i can not realy say it because i do not use the mail app that is pre-installed on the tablet.

Just discovered an ugly bug in Claw-Mail.
When attempting to create a new account,
there's no way out of the dialog other than to actually create one,
even a fake account.
You can't simply cancel the dialog:-(
