What I would like is a decent free dvd to divx converter, but they don't seem to exsist. If I had that.. it would be a pretty easy two step process to get great quality dvd to n800(or 770)

mencoder can do it, so therefore 770-encode can do it (even gives examples).

A DVD GUI would be trivial (I'd be happy to contribute and even host it): show key frames from each chapter, select one or more chapters/titles and kick off 770-encode (or mencoder directly).

And trust me, it won't be too hard...

I use PocketDivXEncoder (http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/) to convert VOB files to DivX. It's "pc" settings are decent enough on their own, but you can tweak them if needed.

Super© (http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html) isn't half bad either, but a little more complicated to set up right. I like PDE's "prediction" on the size of the files created, something I haven't been able to find with Super. Then again, Super has some options PDE doesn't.

Could this program work for the N800?: Acala DVD 3gp Ripper
http://www.cutedvd.com/html/dvd_3gp_ripper.html

I have converted 2 of my DVD movies with Acala DVD 3gp Ripper(for phone), but I do not have a large enough SDcard to insert into N800 to test.
Files range from 153MBto 320MB in size and have the extension 3GP, Mpeg-4 codec, and frame size 176x144(320x240 can be chosen).

Hi,
Will (http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/) rip right from DVD?

Will the media player that comes with N800 play DIVX?

I installed Mplayer and its performance isnt too swift. No controls and its choppy. Maybe I dont know what I am doing. When a file is playing, no matter what I hit on the
screen, it wont pause or respond (once the file is playing) I end up rebooting the device.

Thanks

the media player will not play divx. However I have done really good conversions of divx files to n800 format with mediaconverter

hmm, so I would need to convert 2x to go with DIVX?
Or use mplayer?
Have you used mplayer and what has your experience been? There must be controls. I couldnt find any.
Excuse the ignorance. Very new to this.
Coming from PPC world

I have installed mplayer, but found it to be unreliable. Its been a couple months since I installed it though.. it might be better now. However I just use Canola to watch the moves I have moved over.. terrific touchscreen interface

Try using hardware buttons. Most useful actions are mapped to them (seek forward/backward, exit, volume control). For other more advanced actions (subtitles settings for example) you can invoke OSD menu with pressing 'menu' key. It should be possible to use touchscreen as well in the future versions, but I don't want to make UI stylus dependent (I'm mostly watching TV series in a subway on my way to work, using stylus is awkward there, I want to control the device with only one hand and have the other hand free). Anyway, you can always suggest MPlayer UI improvements in a proper forum thread or what is much more preferable - in garage project trackers. Reporting problems is also very much welcome, they can't be fixed unless we know about them

PS. MPlayer on N800 is still not good because of bad tearing, hopefully the next firmware will allow us to get a smooth video playback support. I'm still using Nokia 770 for watching videos myself
