So the answer seems to be new windows has messed Grub up.

Well. while finishing the installation and booting it usually says "Getting files ready." So it crashed there and rebooted and the error appeared and the reboot loop started.

AMD your Ubuntu is via Wubi or native?

Oh and I've a feeling you are using a pirated copy of Windows 8...

Yeah, I don't know.
Oh and no, I took the disc from my friend and copied the contents.

It's called borrowing. NOT PIRATING. I took permission from him, then copied the contents of his CD to my USB. There is NOTHING wrong with that.

It can't be via WUBI if Ubuntu boots but Windows does not.

I suspect the link I posted has an answer. It seems to be a known issue: dual boot Ubuntu with Windows, breaks upon upgrading Windows to W8.

Did you read the EULA? Did you ask permission from your friend or from Microsoft?
