Have you noticed the iTablet?
http://geekpenguin.blogspot.com/2007...3-release.html

It could fit with some hacking..

As another developer; maybe a better way to do it (looking for extensibility) would be that it would look for all *.png/gif files in its main directory. If it had a .wav named the same it would play it, if it had a directory named the same, it would traverse to that directory and show it as a new window. This would allow you to have "Food -> Drink -> Water", "Food -> Restaurant -> Mexican" and any other combination to make things a bit more organized.

That should be a fairly simple application to build. I know I could build it in PHP in about an hour. I assume it should be only a bit harder in python or another scripting language.

Maybe a quick tweak of Aisu's piano app would be exactly what you are looking for. Says it took him 15 minutes.

He put up a video here

How about using the built-in camera and microphone to add pictures and sounds? For example people could look at the camera and say their name (or "mom", "dad") and their picture would then be added somewhere in the menu. Also items such as cups or chairs etc. could be added this way if the lighting is good enough for the built-in camera.

Wonder how hackable the recently released iTablet app is?

Will have to take a look...

I evidentially missed a couple posts here, but :-)...

Dug into iTablet (not itunes :-)) a bit and got something to work.

Randomly selected the itunes button (intuitive my arse ;-) and changed the settings for what it is supposed to do with:

/home/user/vftest

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 59 Jan 19 12:42 vftest

The contents of which are:

/usr/bin/flite "This is a long test to see if this works"

And work it does :-)!

Now to try to figure out how to make those icons into something useful. Even text would be more useful, I think.

You guys are awesome. One of these days, I hope that I will be able to think like a programmer and do things like this. I look forwaard to trying these ideas out.

Kathy, check if such an application doesn't yet exist in "Flash" (Adobe/Macromedia Flash) on some website.

If yes, you can simply save it into the filesystem of the tablet and load it later on using the File Manager. I've done this e.g. for small music learning programs that work in quite a similar way.
