if hildon-desktop is crashing I would advise not go around it. It means that you have broken something by yourself (might be some applications from devel & testing etc.)
One known problem is that if you use 3rd party apps that make folders to your application main screen might make hildon-desktop use constantly cpu (for fix this I would recommend updated hildon-desktop from here or just installing those apps that make hildon go crazy)

Those are the commands; open up xterm, type 'root', and then gpe-filemanager.
