Is there any chance whatsoever to have a user replaceable eMMC module, similar to regular RAM sockets? I guess the eMMC modules are designed to be attached via a ball grid array. But would there be any chance of having a socket to allow for user replacement?

The eMMC eventually goes bad, and since it's non replaceable, it's the achiles heel of these systems IMO.

Yes, BGA. Will check, thanks for the idea! However sockets afaik tend to be huge and expensive
[edit] there's a completely weird idea striking me, around a special type of conductive double-sided sticky tape... Alas the BGA pitch is too fine for that tape[/edit]

I have to say that you guys suck......in the best peer pressure way .

All the arguments that you all presented (endsormeans, joerg_rw, woke) are ones that I've made myself. But it was "Those donations are what makes the whole project happen" that put me over the line, since waiting doesn't help get parts or number to lower prices.

I use my n900 everyday. This is without over clocking and thumbkernal. Which sometimes it's slow or crashing, but since it's my main phone I don't do much deep experimenting. Though I may start to until I get my neo.

But I believe in this project and I believe in supporting privacy and independent developer/manufacturing, which is why I donate 200 eu!

Now were my stuff....

I must say...you most definitely suck too.

The Odroid-XU has a small connector for a separate board with the eMMC on it:

Could something like that work for the Neo900?

I have another (maybe stupid) question and idea... Where will be the very low-level booting code (well, maybe not the lowest-lowest, but the uboot-level one) stored? Will it be on some special emmc partition (or maybe "memory range" would be better wording)? If so, will it be easy to tell the device to e.g. use the same memory range, but on external sd card instead of emmc (maybe some small jumper/hw switch even)? If not, will the uboot code be on separate chip and be flashable somehow? (I had e.g. crappy and infamous Hawkboard - it had some small flash memory which stored uboot and could be reflashed independently of other memory). One of these solutions could help to make the device work after the emmc chip fails and there is no replacement (either because it is irreplacable or because of other reasons).

it's planned to make boot order as flexible as possible. Booting from NAND, eMMC and uSD should all three be possible.

That's an interesting concept, definitely worth some investigation.

If having a socket is not practical (due to size or cost), how about having an internal microSD socket? Running on microSD is not as efficient as running on eMMC, but it has these advantages:
- Replaceable.
- Disposable.
- Flexible (ability to upgrade to larger and faster storage).

You don't need to replace the eMMC with the internal microSD, just have it there in addition of the eMMC. Then, enable selection of which to use on boot.

And, since I got your attention, another pet peeve of mine is the fact that you can't run the N900 without a battery attached. I know of excellent hardware that can run simply off the AC. Any chance of this happening? Or maybe it's already been thought of.

I didn't see this before my last post.

Hopefully you can add "internal uSD" to the list.

An additional internal uSD socket basically takes no room.

Big plus to booting from the 3 joerg!

And malfunctioning ....sir ...you definitely do not live up to your name...
Malfunctioning ...indeed!
I'd say you are performing optimally.
functioning on all cylinders in fact.
I am TOTALLY and unequivocally in absolute favour of the option to have the ability to go battery-less and run off AC. That would free up the future difficulty of finding (then) discontinued batteries...making us far less reliant on a corporate provider ....or the sellers desire to hike prices astronomically...or at the mercy of resold old used ones, or frauds and fakes.
