OK, granted: Harmattan is not Maemo.

It's not Meego either, though.

From a developer standpoint -- if you have to port your app from Harmattan to run on a Meego device, then it's not Meego.

The change from .deb to .rpm alone is a huge deal-breaker.

If you're calling your OS 'Meego', then it damn well should be able to install .rpms of Meego apps.

not good enough, a source talks of the effective abandonment of Meego.

does nothing to dispute or refute the Feb11th press-release from nokia saying that meego was being scaled back as a target of investment given that it was now a project and not a platform.

scaled back, not canned or closed, and given the ridiculous sum nokia has traditionally spent on R&D the post-Elopalypse Meego investment by nokia is still significant.

That first one is one guy talking who got laid off two years ago.

The second one talks about the Symbian layoffs/transfer and further future planned layoffs.

I'm not aware of anyone having been fired yet. Nokia is still very much committed to this next device. After that, we will see.

Please, spare me the corporatese.

'Scaled back' means Nokia will release whatever they cooked up for the N9 Harmattan device, and then immediately go on to fire their whole Linux department.

If you think Elop and Microsoft will finance Linux development while WP7 is circling down the drain, then you must be insane.

i wonder if some of you guys even work in a big corporation

The political battles have already been fought and Meego lost utterly. The loser will now be put on the back burner with a skeleton crew while its full steam for WP7.

This next and last device is only released for 1 reason - they have nearly finished the device, might as well release it and recoup as much cost as possible. But you can bet your *** they will not spend anything significant more to push it - its about maximising sales at this point.

1. WIll there be an SDK ala fremantle?

2. How much of it can we backport/steal/copy to n900?

still not good enough.

If nokia can come out and announce the complete closure of symbian investment, and symbian phones, then they could just as easily do the same for Meego.

they did not.

Quim has mentioned many times that there will be a Harmattan SDK release.

I don't think anyone knows, yet.
