DJ_Steve's pretty talented. He was the one to work out some issues with Mer and got it running on the HTC Kaiser. Sigh, a forgotten hardware and a forgotten software

From the Wha? department:

Samsung has been ordered by some judge to pony up its prototypes to Apple:

Haha... It seems that Apple is on a warpath to block Sammy from selling in the US. Good luck with that.

There are more than enough points of differentiation on the GTab and GSII despite their similarities.

Minecraft is certainly on its way to Android, and the Xperia Play will see it first:

Another big game. In the pipe five-by-five.

Well, well, well.. This is GREAT to see! BlueStacks allows Android to run on Windows:

I hope this trend continues and Android apps find homes on other operating systems as well (such as Linux). Android in Ubuntu would give me access to a plethora of games sorely lacking on the system!

It is looking as if the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may ship with Android 3.1!

This a pretty big deal, as 3.1 looks to have much more overall polish than 3.0, and some nifty new features.

More content blocking on rooted devices! This time it's blockbuster:

http://androidandme.com/2011/05/appl...ing-bandwagon/

This could be the beginning of a trend.

This move can only increase the rate of piracy, as this (arguably small) group of users will get their content fix using other channels.

What's most interesting is the DRM software (Widevine) seems to deploy to Windows as well, which is pretty much a fully 'rooted' system, as well as OSX. In other words, if the software works as it should, I don't see the benefit of excluding rooted Android users.

Additionally, installing the APK on a non-rooted system, then rooting it or mounting the FS image, will give access to the APK. Either way, the APK can be easily exposed, and the content accessed. If they're worried about reverse-engineering or de-compiling the code, I don't think this will help much.

Perhaps it's one of those things that just sound good to executives but amounts to false security.

What's to prevent someone with a hex editor from changing a few bits to make it skip the check or to reverse the logic to allow ONLY rooted phones to (i.e. instad of BNE (branch if not equal) token code, change it to a BOE (branch if equal) code in the binary?). Seriously stupid.

Also.. as an aside, it's been a year or so.. but this seems to be gathering more and more steam and Samsung has already embedded digital TV tuners in their Galaxy S for South America! Here's hoping it becomes the norm in North America--especially with all the crazy weather we've seen lately (and generally poor availability of phone networks during catastrophes):

GO SAMSUNG!!!

It seems that at least one company is planning on releasing an Android console for the Tele:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/e...your-tv-this-f

This looks like a bad photoshop, but who knows? It could be legit.

I would certainly get a Google TV that had similar characteristics.

Android is about to directly compete in the console world. Sure, the graphics would be downright primitive compared to PS3 or even Wii, but casual gamers may not fret about this too much...

Holy ****...

Could this be an actual screen capture of an upcoming Tegra 3 game headed to Android?

Madfinger's ShadowGun:

http://www.madfingergames.com/coming-soon

If this is indeed a screenshot, I am officially a fan of Tegra SoCs. Those certainly are console quality graphics.

Here's the press release:
MADFINGER Games Announces SHADOWGUN

Unity-powered Action Title to Storm Tablets and Smartphones in 2011

Brno, Czech Republic - 25th May, 2011 – Madfinger Games, creators of Samurai II: Vengeance, today announced the beginning of a new property SHADOWGUN, with an emphasis on next-gen graphics and immersive gameplay.

By focusing on mobile platforms- including smartphones and tablets- Madfinger has created the most advanced handheld game in the market, optimized for superb performance and offering gamers the same quality expected from console gaming systems.

With SHADOWGUN, Madfinger is expanding the entertainment potential of smartphone, iOS devices and tablets. SHADOWGUN will support Android mobile devices powered by the NVIDIA Tegra super chip, and will be available on the Tegra Zone app and Android Market.

Authored with the Unity development platform, SHADOWGUN combines tactical combat with third person harrowing action, ushering in a new visual standard for handheld gaming. SHADOWGUN puts players into the role of John Slade, a professional bounty hunter in the year 2350. Slade’s mission: hunt down Dr. Edgar Simon, renowned geneticist and former employee of the trans-galactic corporation Toltech Enterprises. Players must lead “shadowgun” John Slade as he infiltrates Dr. Simon’s mountain fortress and fights his personal army of mutants, cyborgs, and genetically-enhanced humanoids. Using state-of-the-art weaponry, ships, and the assistance of S.A.R.A.—Slade’s personal android assistant. The story is written by award winning author Micah Nathan who has joined the MadFinger team as executive creative consultant for SHADOWGUN.

“SHADOWGUN is possibly the the best expression of quality production achievable on mobile devices and a great indicator of what consumers can expect from future mobile games,” said Brett Seyler, General Manager of Union. “We’re very proud to see this kind of creative product created with Unity and excited to offer it to our partners through our Union distribution service.”
In addition to an optimized version for Android super phones and tablets powered by Tegra 2, Madfinger is also developing an even more enhanced version supporting NVIDIA’s Project Kal-El, the next-generation Tegra quad-core processor. Ashu Rege, Vice President of Game Content and Technology at NVIDIA, said: “SHADOWGUN shows off the console-quality experience that Tegra is bringing to Android devices. We’re especially excited that Madfinger is creating a special version of SHADOWGUN that’s optimized for multi-core processors and will take advantage of the processing and graphics power of Project Kal-El.”
