xp here;set up the ffmpeg path manually, update button appears. Click it? Crash. used rc1 to install ruby. Also... crash, close window or ctrl c makes no difference; vlc process is always left hanging.

Did you install the gems after installing rc1? Can you post the result of command "gem list"?

Deinstalled;reinstalled. Results largely identical, but I managed to get the XP server to recognize a single folder containing two .avi files. Firing up the client on the N800 sees the files; playback of either simply causes the client to crash instantly. I'm not feeling the love...

Hmm, I think I have an older ruby, but most of my gems are newer:

fxri (0.3.6)
fxruby (1.6.12)
hpricot (0.6)
log4r (1.0.5)
rake (0.7.3)
rubyscript2exe (0.5.3)
sources (0.0.1)
sqlite3-ruby (1.2.3)
win32-api (1.4.3, 1.0.4)
win32-clipboard (0.4.3)
win32-dir (0.3.2)
win32-eventlog (0.4.6)
win32-file (0.5.4)
win32-file-stat (1.2.7)
win32-open3 (0.3.1)
win32-process (0.6.0, 0.5.3)
win32-sapi (0.1.4)
win32-sound (0.4.1)
windows-api (0.3.0, 0.2.0)
windows-pr (1.0.5, 0.7.2)

ruby -v
ruby 1.8.6 (2007-09-24 patchlevel 111) [i386-mswin32]

Can you try "gem update" and installing newer mswin32 versions? Wonder why your gems differ.

well, I installed the RC1 you indicated... unless you meant a much earlier build...? Will attempt gem update and report back.

Update: updated win32 gems manually; behavior identical... Update Collection crashes the server. Also: failed attempts to view the avis in the collection cause the client to crash, run ruby.exe to 100% cpu on the xp side or leaves hanging 100% cpu mencoder process there.

Client is written in Vala so 2008he could be possible, but can't make any promises. Playback would probably be awfully slow though. Old Knots can be made to work on 2006/2007, I think I even have a package for it, but 770 really is a bit too slow for it to be enjoyable.

Sorry to hear that. For some reason your ruby fails to execute external programs properly. I would love to solve this so if you can find the time and you're not totally fed up, please join our irc channel someday.

Heh. "Totally fed up" is close to describing the situation, but that's the way these things go. I'm a stay@home dad busily raising a four-year-old, but if I can sneak some time in to debug, I'll fire up the ol' IRC as soon as I can. In the meantime, some more info that might help: the PC is a Pentium 4-233 with 1.5GB RAM running an up-to-date patched version of Win XP Pro/MCE (except for IE8, no thank you). Could the processing power (or lack of same) be an issue? I'll try again on another PC as well... and if that doesn't work? Well, I have been considering running a Ubuntu box ;D
