XP mode in windows 7 is only available in Pro or Ultimate editions. VirtualBox runs on anything...
I dont work on maybe's or someone just saying it works, i work on a solid proved system thats been proven with NO problems whatsoever so if you look at the post directly below yours you will find out that he cannot get it to work , no one has got this flashing to work on a 64 bit W7 that can give a step by step proven in every way with not a single problem so untill then i still say NO it cannot be done.
Your saying it can yet i dont see the proof from the very people trying it on this thread including youeself, one person did but he never gave an explanation to the full he gave a link to the instructions on a page within Meamo.org.
WHY run people round in circles when there is indeed a proven way to flash on a 32bit xp based flashing program, so stick with what works and let people do what they want to do without the headaches and the complications.
Please try to remember that Linux is not a very well known OS for most people uncluding myself who have stuck with DOS and Windows based systems.
Windows 7- 64 bit has many problems as you should know.
Its not fair to anyone to just come on here and say yes it can be done without a FULL explanation step by step from start to finish, this is what is available for 32bit xp based flasher.
So i say NO because its a lot easier for someone to use a proven method... ok?.

I think you could start by telling us what OS you're using and what exact message you got and where you got it, might help. ^^

is it normal that when i attach my nokia n900 with holding u i hear a beep like attaching a usb-stick or any other usb device.

i just can't figure out what i'm doing wrong.

although i haven't found out yet about the "not checking drivers" option. when i press f8 when booting i get a list with my hd, external hd, cd drive etc.

can anyone explain please?
The youtube instructions should have more details but anyway:

1) Shutdown N900, and detach the USB from the PC
2) launch Virtual PC that runs XP
3) install flasher-3.5 in the XP
4) put the firmware you've downloaded in the same folder as flasher-3.5.exe is in
6) Make sure one end of the USB cable is attached to N900
7) Open the keyboard of N900
8) holding the "u" key of the keyboard of the N900 with your thumb of your right hand
9) while holding the "u" pressed down, use your left hand to attach the other end of USB cable to the PC
10) N900 should be recognized by your host system *WINDOWS 7*
11) look at the top right hand corner of your N900. should you see a USB symbol there, release your thumb of your right hand from the "u" key you were pressing
12) now go back to the Virtual PC, it upper tabs are "Action, USB, Tools, Ctl-Alt-Del", press the "USB" tab.
13) you should see at the bottom of the list of the USB tab "N900 shared", click it
14) A pop windows should appear in the Virtual PC saying that attaching share device "N900" to the virtual machine will disconnect it from your (host) computer. Of course click "Yes"
15) The XP in Virtual PC should find your N900 now.
16) Check the screen of the N900 again, make sure the USB symbol is still present
17) Now you may follow the wiki to flash your N900 in the command line mode of the XP under Virtual PC AT YOUR OWN RISK

Hope this help.

I'm running windows vista home premium , 64bit , I get the message " Suitable USB device not found, waiting."

Do I have to flash the eMMC first and the flash the firmware ?

It might be that the maemo flasher doesn't work with 64bit vista ?

Cheers.

It doesn't work with 64-bit Windows as stated in the wiki(http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware), which you are supposed to read thoroughly before flashing your device.

You must take reference to the option 1,2,3 or 4 for flashing your device under 64-bit windows, you simple can't do it directly(http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...9&postcount=67). I took option 3 and confirmed it works. I'm sure others have been successful in other option that you may also refer to.

(click the links above, it may help you.)

@9000, i read that unsigned drivers etc story a lot of times, but always when i press f8 i get a boot menu where i can choose between hd, external hd, cd-drive etc... but no option with the driver in it.. tried the hd boot (while the others are useless, no OS installed)... but no result.
