Not really, the US market is inbred and it's not often that outsiders do well in it.

I'd hate to suggest looking at doing business in mainland China. They're just as varied and can be quite limiting.
For mobile they're streets ahead of the US (mainly owing to the decision to use widespread standards like GSM), you could roam from one end of the country to the other without much problems (YMMV in rural areas of course). And unlike some places (eg UK, London Underground) you also get coverage on the metro too!

Absolutely. No point having a kick-arse device in your pocket with a long charging lead sticking out of it

Precisely! Verizon hasn't been limiting features in wifi or bluetooth--and there are many people (and a few manufacturers) who compile their own bluez stack to implement FAR more drivers and features than Google has included in their default package. (Case in point, Dell's Streak 5 with excellent Bluetooth HID keyboard support!) I've only ever seen MANUFACTURERS do stuff to these phones (sometimes negotiating add-ins and crippling at the carrier's behest, if the device is tied to the carrier--but ultimately, it's still the manufacturer not the carrier that creates the OS image). That's been my understanding and experience so far, anyway.

So are you saying that the blame lies with the manufacturer even though it is the carrier which is demanding the crippling as condition for carrying the device?

Why are you saying the blame lies with the carrier even though it is the manufacturer which is in control of any crippling (or lack thereof) as a condition for offering their device to the carrier?

Chances are far more likely that the devices aren't being crippled so much as being bloated, is kinda the point.

Carrier says to manufacturer if you want us to sell your phone then you must remove wifi (so it doesn't eat into our exhorbitant data charges) and you must remove voip (so it doesn't eat into our exhorbitant voice charges).
