You are making this way harder than it needs to be. Just:

1. Create a new contact
2. Enter the full phone #, with extra digits, in the "Cell/Phone" field (green handset icon)
3. Click on "Add field"
4. Scroll down and select the light blue "Skype" field (from my picture)
5. Enter only the main phone number from step #2, then just save the contact.

Again, it should look like my picture from above.

It works in the US. All calls that require additional digits after connecting, and prompted, will register however the "tone" is not audible. Even when the # key is required following any numbered input. The only issue is that one can not enter the extra digits as part of the "Skype" field in a given contact. Only the primary telephone number can be entered in that field. Additional digits must be entered manually.

Skype does not support using a p for a pause on ANY client. Even though people have been asking for it from skype for over three years (search for insert pause skype on google)

So, yeah, WONTFIX because the core code from skype doesn't do this would be my guess.

i don't want to change skype, can't nokia just pause for x time before sending a DTMF tone based on number string.

A work around would be just dial the number unto the "p" and don't sent or dial the DTMF tone.

Of course I use Skype!
Especially when I am abroad and need to speak with my family or colleagues.
One of the reasons I bought N900 was native Skype!

Skype is not Nokia's software. Its not Nokia's responsibility to fix. This is a "Skype" issue.

Again, just enter the telephone number only in the Skype field of your contact. When prompted for the extra digits, enter them manually.

Nokia apply WONTFIX to all skype problems.
Skype out is also one of the main reasons i continue using my n900.

blocking unsolicited users who spam skype = WONTFIX
inability to dial using skype from my contacts = WONTFIX

it looks like Nokia are not keen on getting Skype running smoothly on the n900 which leads me to believe it's not important or has no future.
