Oh, pop in your start up script 'respawn'
Code:
start on started hildon-desktop
stop on starting shutdown
exec /etc/init.d/frost_custom_settings
respawn
This will make sure if your script ends it will get restarted automatically, try this to kill your script:
Code:
killall dbus-monitor
To make sure it works add to the beginning of your script
Code:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=com.nokia.mce /com/nokia/mce/request com.nokia.mce.request.req_vibrator_pattern_activate string:PatternIncomingMessage
it's good way of indicating all is working.

using 'Queen BeeCon Widget' i now have 4 brightness settings on my desktop.
Levels are for now L1: 10 - L2: 70 - L3: 160 - L4: 255
L1 is good for night time reading
L2 is a good level for general purpose
L3 is really nice for show off colors in video's and everything else
L4 is for DAMN THAT SUN!!!
more or less levels can be added as needed

After selecting a setting it will remember it so on next reboot the brightness will be as last selected

just need to make some icons or something.

Thanks for everyone's work on this, the N900 light sensor is my sworn enemy

At work I leave N900 on my desk and use it with my left hand -- this means every time I reach my hand to touch the screen, it covers the light sensor, causing the screen to become so dark I can't see it anymore from my chair without leaning over it. The only solution was to set brightness to max, which is entirely too bright and wastes battery.

Also when outside in sunlight, screen is hard to see, so I put my hand over it to shade it. My reward, of course, is that N900 sees my shade and turns the screen even darker, effectively thwarting my attempt at seeing the screen.

I look forward to trying your script later when I have some time to play and am excited about less-than-nuclear brightness

Ready..... here comes version 1.0
---------------------------
--- im making an install right now --- done..
with an install file:
open terminal
'root' or 'sudo gainroot'
'cd / "folder" /custom_brightness'
'sh ./install'
edit /etc/mce/mce.ini remove 'filter-brightness-als;' 'from Modules='
import beecon or make own beecon
reboot for everything to take effekt

folder = where you put it - /home/user/MyDocs/

usual tools "needed"
rootsh, midnight commander, queen beecon widget

after a lot of reboots and file permissions edit, it should work now.

Let me know if you encounter any problems.

-- Zip has been updated for none working beecon widgets --

--- Have moved the zip to Install Custom Brightness - no ALS

has anyone tested it yet?
only thing that doesn't work in this mod is when the screen "fades" if you press screen or a button to keep the screen from going dark, it doesn't go to the brightness that you have selected, unless you tap the keylock twice (screen off & on), or if you press one of the beecon L* settings.
I'm trying to find out how to disable that fade for this to never "fail", all so trying to find out how to just define 5 custom steps for the 5 normal steps.

i have made a new thread which will be for testing this mod
Custom Brightness - N900 - no ALS is now ready for install
