Jolla will not be supporting N9 themselves. Sailfish is also partly closed source.

But Sailfish will run on Mer, so if N9 will run Mer, it will run Sailfish.

However, apparently GPS and camera remain closed and don't work on Mer.

I think you are pretty well supported, everywhere in fact.

But that has nothing to do with alienating everyone else who doesn't use Facebook or Twitter (and I assume MANY/most Jolla enthusiasts don't give a cr*p about FB...).

Yes, but that would be "illegal", and waste at least five minutes of my time. Refer to my previous post.

Can we please get off this topic of who uses face book and why? This irrelevant to the thread title.

Also, for the benefit of those who do not have an Fb account, if anyone decides to repeat what they have read about Jolla on that site, can you please check that the information is accurate with the source and not just lift the FUD/Mis-information from a fan page.

thanks

Can't blame you, FB is evil. I thought that thread was public.

While it'll be trivial to get Sailfish on N9, _full_ support is unlikely to happen. There are a few bits missing support (i.e., either binary blobs, _compiled_ for sailfish, or complete reimplementation), including GPS and camera.
Booting Nemo (what we're using as base) on N9 has been solved long time ago. There is no additional magic involved in getting Sailfish to boot. However, some parts of the hardware (like GPS and Camera) don't have opensource drivers, and I'm not aware of anyone working on that currently. Considering it takes serious development effort to get those running it's unlikely to happen
as a Jolla engineer I can tell you that that's unlikely to happen (though not impossible, if community does some serious hardware hacking for Nemo for the missing hardware parts). It's true that it will be trivial to make most of the features working on N9, but not all. Right now I don't see enough community involvement around N9 development to get it done, thought that hopefully might change after release
There will be _no_ porting of Sailfish done by Jolla. There is however lot's of Jolla involvement in the Nemo project, including some parts of the Nemo hardware adaptation for N9. That's what you could use to boot Nemo on N9 for over a year already, it's just not suitable for end users. Sailfish can sit on top of an unmodified Nemo hardware adaptation. So if anyone is interested in making Sailfish work better (or support more bits of hardware) he should just head over to the Nemo project now, and start hacking.
Like I said, the tricky part is the hardware adaptation, which is completely coming from Nemo, and is something that has started back in MeeGo times under Nokia already
Bolded text above for MINKIN2's benefit

I also forgot to mention Sailfish apps will be compatible with Nemo, if the Nemo team wish it:

In the video demo from MWC2013 with Jolla CTO Stefano Mosconi he uses the camera, so i think camera works?

Was he using the n9 or n950? I've not seen a video with the n9 being used to demo Sailfish, although I may have missed one or two.
