This is the best policy. If it's an unregulated spectrum, why are laws being passed to regulate it? It's a problem that fixes itself. Uneducated customer A purchases a wifi router. Neighbor B decides to piggy-back on and torrent some movies, download kiddie porn, and research terrorist cells he can join. The ISP gets involved and sends a love letter to Customer A who either 1) educates himself or 2) pays someone educated to fix the situation.

If, on the other hand, neighbor B checks his email, browses ITT, makes a VoIP call or two; customer A may very well have no problem leaving the access point open if/when he finds out.

Look at it this way if your standing on the street or whatever and connected to open wifi and a cop or someone says something to you, just lie and say the tablet is a cell phone....like theyd actually know, this isnt exactly rocket science.

That's pretty much how I figured it. I wasn't wanting to have wifi while driving. I just wanted to have longer reach while in the car.

Thank you. You will note that in my entire discussion I have repeatedly stated that mere observation of an access point, that is your computer telling you it is there is not a crime. Nor is it necessarily a crime that your computer automatically connects to open WIFI (Stupid security wise but not necessarily a crime). What I have stated repeatedly is that the purpose and intentional USE of someones access point without their permission IS THE CRIME.

Why is it a crime? because the router is not yours and you know that when you connect to it. You willfully connected to a network that is not yours. It doesn't matter what YOU think about that act, the fact is such an action is trespass or unauthorized access to a computer network. To claim that somehow one does not know that using someone elses stuff without permission is a foreign concept is specious.

Hell, even hitchhiking is illegal. They say no one rides for free... I guess that holds true for just about everything.

Well, aside from that last sentence needing a rewrite for us to know what the heck you mean, no, there's no "wilfull" about it, and since I made that clear in my posting, and you're 'wilfully' ignoring it, then we're not having the same argument, and I decline to engage with your strawman.

HTH. HAND.

You realize you could have said that 6 pages ago?

Well I've never looked into that but if you ask me for a ride and I agree I can't see the illegality to it. But if you want to explain please do.
