I would like to point out however that closing th app was not very intuitive to me. To close the app I first minimize to get the overview of open apps and then I close it from there. Is there a different way of quitting the app from within?
No, not at the moment. I'm putting in a fullscreen toggle button that should make it a bit easier to work out.

beautiful looking app!
Would pausing animation while panning make it even more fluent?

Working on fixing the animations during certain interactions.

In case anyone is confused, I'll clarify the main use for this app.

When you get abducted by a gang and while in the trunk of their vehicle you unlock the screen of your mighty n900 which you just pulled out of your pocket. Some ppl would instinctively call a friend or 911. This wouldn't be very useful not knowing where you are being taken. You open columbus and connect over the network to whomever it is who can help you, enable live logging of your location and then slide the n900 back in your pocket.

Other (less interesting)/(more likely) applications exist.

Actually, it'd probably work quite well. If you setup your N900 to stream to a network address where you have a service running and waiting. All you need to do is start the application and it'll connect and start streaming

That actually is a pretty good idea.

However, don't most nations with rescue agencies capable of saving you from the vehicle of an abducting gang have the capacity to track your phone through the cell-towers already?

However, this is certainly more precise, and it would be even more wonderful for people taking on the gang in a vigilante capacity, whether because the government in the area is incompetent, corrupt, or is the gang in question...

But now I'm taking the joke too seriously, methinks.

Just tried the update but it crashes on start up, even after reboot

Try uninstalling it, then reinstalling it. Failing that can you run it from xterm by entering:
/opt/usr/bin/columbus

And let me know where it fails, cheers.

Great app! (have incorporated the use of this into my zombie apocalypse escape plan)
Is there a possibility that the compass feature can include a toggle between deg and mils?
