Nokia-N900:/root$ /usr/games/openttd
Trying to load sound set, but it is incomplete. The game will probably not run correctly until you properly install this set or select another one.

The following files are corrupted or missing:
sample.cat (You can find it on your Transport Tycoon Deluxe CD-ROM.)

Error: Cannot open file 'sample.cat'
Fixed by doing
Code:
cd /opt/openttd/data
touch sample.cat
But it seems like something isn't right with the package. There was no sample.cat before I made one.

Can you show me the log of _purging_ (dpkg --purge openttd openttd-data openttd-opengfx) everything, then reinstalling it from extras (not extras-devel) ("apt-get install openttd")?

Note that the package passed QA, so it's not "broken" for everybody.

When I purged the package, the /opt/openttd/data/sample.cat I had created by hand was still there so I removed it manually and then reinstalled from extras. Then the sample.cat was present. No clue though why it wasn't there before.

Well at least the package in extras-devel is missing the sample.cat for sure, because it isn't there now that I had purged the one from extras and reinstalled the one from extras-devel.

Well, to be honest I don't know what's on extras-devel right now, as someone did an nmu...

The post 1.0 packaging does not generate the samples.cat files because it is assumed to be used with the free sound effects.

If you have rootsh you need to run, in X Terminal:

Code:
rootsh ln -sf /usr/share/games/openttd/openttd /usr/games/openttd

Please install latest from extras not devel. You'll find there are extra bugs in the -devel one.

I installed the latest 1.0.x from extras-devel.

This doesn't work for me.
However, I can launch it from the terminal (no root access needed).

Code:
/opt/openttd/./openttd
So, I assumed that the .desktop file needs fixing.

I found the file in /usr/share/applications/hildon/openttd.desktop

Changing the "Exec" line to the following makes it launchable from the application menu:

Code:
Exec=/opt/openttd/./openttd
