I was using n900 till 2012 , and moved cause of company to blacberry and iphone. Iphone was satisfying until ios9 where the last real jailbreak was happening. Tried few more devices from android era , and finally decided, nice lot of apps and stuff with this big touch screen devices, but sometimes keyboard and simple linux Better, not for phone these days but perfect for a pocket computer. Why not to order a new n900 , unfortunately no other maemo release which working properly end-to-end after Freemantle

So I ordered and received my phone refurbished in China maybe. After that I knew already it no longer a very easy straight forward. The phone i got was completely ok condition outside, the keyboard bit worned off the keyboard light not really as it should , but who care of those rest were ok.

So from here can be useful if anyone still will unpack another refurbished nokia n900.

-Nokia support all way dead, if your OS ok and not coming with some chiense apps and extreme lag, might not need a reflash but I suggest it, both emmc and Fiasco. As nokia stopped everything about this phone and with maemo, you can download the firmware and Vanila from https://fladnag.net/downloads/telephone/n900/
Flasher from amd64 windows problems thanks for this http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...0&postcount=20
-do Ref-lash if you are on earlier than latest version, save a lot of pain and time (what i had with apt and improper dist-upgrade), re-flash take 5 minutes.
-without having internet connection delete all nokia repositories and use only maemo.org (if you have internet connection app manager will still try to update.
-Download any other apt gui which can select multiple packages without any nasty pop-up about nokia, which officially dead , could be any i did with faster application manager
-forget built in app manager and only add the sources from the wiki (which a copy/mirror of nokia dead repo), to your alternative apt gui

If you are root , just edit directly the sources.list (the one used by your app manager) and here you go.

Now it is as it should be

Just want to clarify: Did you install CSSU and have you checked "Perfect setup for N900" instructions? CSSU uses the stock appmanager (at least so I have understood). And I downloaded from wayback machine pages the flasher and the image. There are here also instructions to get Netsurf 3.8 browser working through easy debian (which I suggest you install on an sdcard ext3 formatted). And cutetube2 has also instruction for power kernel to watch youtube or to download videos to the N900.

Bravo Maemish.

I am very impressed.
impressed with the speed you have absorbed quite a few things.
and equally impressed with the concise and exacting suggestions offered.

Not that my feelings on any issue mean a hill of beans ...
nor that I think my views mean that much in the great scheme of things...
But for what its worth...
I am mightily mightily impressed.

I personally can only be that straight and concise for so long..

Now for god sake...
do something off the wall and completely random ...
before you implode.

For some reason I first read the meaning "missed many things" to the word "absorb" and thought that I scr.wd up again and you are giving a sarcastic applause/lecture. Phew.

Hardly...
If I give sarcastic applause or a lecture I do it over the top ...so it is hard to miss....
(actually it is usually less sarcastic applause / lecture ...and usually more simply over the top dark or sideways humour...)
Mostly though...
I am straight up .

And no....
you didn't screw up in any way at all.

No reason to feel relieved over something that never was in the first place Maemish.

your post was pretty much flawless maemo-community-support in its reply.
What I would have expected out of a maemo veteran of a good few years..
What I would have expected as a response out of myself, Juice, Peter, Pichlo, Mscion, or Wiki ...

So yes.
There is no screwing up for you now.
So don't think like that...
There is only omission by forgetfulness or by not being versed in a specific maemo study you are not familiar with to be able to help others on...yet.
And that will change to greater or lesser degree depending on your areas of maemo interest...
So don't think you can do it all...
If you can do the generalities ...that is excellent.
If you can manage a few advanced areas ....excellent..
But don't try to be the expert on it all...
That would make your brain melt.

Now go and post or do something completely random...

I need to go do something else... ...before my brain melts...
Too many serious posts in a row out of me ...is way too many...

Maemish,

The reason I posted, because first I tried with wiki and apt-based services, it ended up with boot-loop. Wiki is not up-to-date, from that there was not possible to locate the official firmwares.

Standard application manager is fine, if you are not willing to install a lot of apps, but eventually it has a big miss, what all other apt-get ui (aptitude which kinda from the debian begining) with queuing and simple searches... With browser I don't care, I am not even sure if i ever put a sim card into my device, I need it as pocket linux nothing more, I have several mobile phones.... Everyone has....

As nokia hands off and flash officially dead the browsing on this device in current world not a good idea, webpages now (fancy ones) start with sending you a huge javascript for the UI and a lot of traffic, sometimes simplicity better, world disagree right now and fanciness wins, which make incredible hardwares (apparently uneccesery if people would use browser like w3m)...

As nokia turned coat in the past and made the worst dumb deal with supporting windows mobile make a success resulted in the biggest faliure. Now they following the other unlikely "Androider" way, edge-to-edge display with huge and nice display... Currently not the information important , how you present it. There is no need to build 8core arm CPUs with 4 gpu if people does not support the idea making stupid apps with brilliant look...

This resulted majority of people serve now the "stupidity" because the money is there, if those developer would support real solutions and effcient apps instead of shiny , huge display ********... There would be a lot of success with real native apps and , and less power-consuming unnecessary hardwares... Eventually developer follow the market leave maome-like solutions slowly die out.

In the reality no one would need a new phone each year... Maemo offered a lot of useful functions, which were no concurrence that time (integrated unified communications, background processing, freedom and community help each other). Nokia just made bad decision with not pushing a bit more their keen people, and advertise it better...

Then android released i guess version 2 a lot of people picked that, it had less functionality than maemo in general IOS had the same problem. But nokia started deal with microsoft and then Maemo frozen... Still in the same condition as it was, and only few people try to adapt it for the future, see maemo leste. I am sad about it and pretty sure if nokia would have done better with marketing and engaging people it could be on the mainstream, instead let it wipe off from the market.

I have mainstream device for phone and browsing, and use n900 for the rest, from writing script to play nintendo or dosbox, as majority the games wich requires brain and not focusing on the "look" are developer in the past. I would be happy if there is an IDE for maemo to still playing with existing app changes, but after all it still good to have a pocket computer with keyboard and stylus....

I created this tread if anyone receive a used device want to have an easy fast-forward start. First thing I done was based on community wikis, was slow progressing and unsuccesful flashing pr1.2 or 1.3 is fast progress with predictive success in 5 minutes, because i spent a few hours with apt and cleaning chiense stuffs I am pretty sure it is not effcient.... Using queuing to get essential packages also progressing well. Then it is up to the user how to start after setting the device to "production"

Is your phone a chinese remake or a genuine N900 refurbished? If it is a chinese version I would be cautious cause never know what they have installed to the hardware.

refurbished, but came with custom chiense stuff, after flashing global fiasco it looks a lot better (i am not sure if chiense or taiwan, but there were a lot of kanji's), now it is quick and fine same as my USA ordered was in the past. If the HW is for other country cellular interface will have problem, but have no plan to use it right now. For cellular activity i use my 3 years old Iphone coming with company mobile device management, and a lot traffic fortunately
