I for sure know that debeloping hardware takes ALOT of time.

Looks like phone wll not be avaible Q1 2019 as they first said...
Why scary though? Due to the potential delays?

That would be the half empty view.
The half full view would be that they know enough how product design works so they anticipate that things can go wrong with the iMx8 (be it delays on the NxP side, or with software or hardware integration problems), and so they are keeping options open to fallback to the proven platform iMx6, to be able to fulfill the project. That was announced during the campaign, so not much new.

Truth must be in some middle ground...

From the anouncement it seems to me they are pretty much set on using the i.MX8M unless something catastrophic happens.
That would also answer my previous post: According to ARM, the i.MX8M ist Spectre-proof.

I fail to see the ... um ... progress in this "progress report".

This is basically 1/3 company business and 2/3 arts.
While this is both nice and fine, where is the info about the phone, the device, the hardware?

I believe it's backwards to write entire articles about "converging design" of an OS without even mentioning the physical components it's actually supposed to run on.

Well, the project has many aspects. UI is important. There was info there I didn't know before. On short term I don't expect a great deal of progress as they are pulling pieces together. My guess is that it may be a couple of months before we have a clear picture of hardware. Another good thing is they are actually issuing a weekly report. One the other hand, the danger of that is the report can be rather thin when writing on that time scale. Regardless,I'm cautiously optimistic right now.

As the CPU choice is pretty clear lately, we are going to have a meeting with NXP and some other chip makers at Embedded World in Nürnberg, Germany, at the end of the month
...
Our own hardware engineering team together with the software team, especially our low level and kernel engineers, started to create a hardware BOM (bill of material) and also a “floor plan” for a potential PCB (printed circuit board) layout, but it turns out that many manufacturers are reluctant to work with the i.MX 8M since it is a new CPU/SOC.
