I couldn't resist the Woot deal and will soon be a Nokia 770 owner.

What hardware upgrades should I make? Memory, I assume.

What is the essential software I should get?

Is there anything I need to know?

Thanks for your help. I'm an old geezer and the development for the 770 reminds me of early computer days when we had to worry about coding efficiency and memory. I'm not sure what applications other than internet access I'll use this for. Have you found any unusual applications that might be fun?

I would definitely get a 2 GB RS MMC card if you can afford it. The card which is included doesn't given you much space to work with.

As far as apps go, I use the following on a regular basis:
-Gizmo Project (SIP based VOIP software)
-Pidgin (IM client with support for every protocol known to man)
-Rdesktop and VNC Viewers for remote access
-Maemo Mapper (killer GPS mapping software which can download maps from google)
-Gnumeric (Spreadsheet)
-Xournal (sketching app)
-Mplayer (video player)
-FBReader (excellent etext reader)
-Xterm, cause you can't have a Linux box without one
-Sylpheed Claws (3rd party email client, because the built in one sucks eggs)
-Minimo (A web browser based on Firefox. Not quite ready for prime time in some ways, but a lot better than Opera in others)
-SSH and misc other command line utilities
