Mine only came with a micro-USB charger.
I am not really clear why there would a a non microUSB charger. Where would that even be plugged into?

no, this adapter is from non-microUSB chargers to microUSB port for the N900, so you can use old nokia chargers which don't have microUSB.

It's not a separate charger, it's an adapter with a microUSB plug on one end, and a hole for the small-tip Nokia chargers on the other (which have been what Nokia have been using for the last 2-3 years, before going to microUSB).

It's an adapter for older Nokia chargers that plugs into the N900 microUSB port.

Bought mine on amazon a week ago and it did not have the adapter, either. Not that I care, I don't have any other chargers to use it with.

If you want a cheap clone ...
Cheap at $3, but it looks like the real (OEM) thing.
Made in China by Foxlink according to the silk-screen.
It looks high quality inside, and certainly not simple.
Works well with my old car-charger.

It is a buck-boost DC converter. Will raise or lower the voltage as needed. From a single 18650 Li-Ion cell, it drew 1.6A charging the phone in a brief test.

I wonder if the missing adapters are related to reports on the web of the device overheating and a hole melting in it.

Nah, they're still including it in europe afaik?

BTW, since you've opened your (DX?) adapter, any measurements on efficiency? Would be interesting to know how much of that 1.6A@3.7V came out the other side
