GPD is on a Roll and is making another GPD Win in 2018. This one features a Core M3 processor, 6" screen, and an improved keyboard. The processor should be able to run a decent amount of older PC games. The Dragonbox Pyra is going to be EVEN more out of date.
I hope we have some small form factor Windows devices with the Snapdragon 835

You may want to fix the thread title (GPW -> GPD)

Why does it have those ridiculous-looking joysticks and stuff?

It's their core business, GPD = Game Pad Digital

too bad it is not another Pocket:
GPD Win 2 is expected to ship with an Intel Core M3-7Y30 processor, which is a huge upgrade from the Atom x7-Z87xx chip used in the first-gen model. The new chip offers much better performance without increasing power consumption.
In a heartbeat I would buy another one.
I would guess linux on a Core M? might have less interface issues

Does that mean I can get the Win 2 without a proprietary OS or that it works decently with FLOSS?
And does it have a modem?

Otherwise I don't even see how you'd compare both devices on a common base that allows for such a conclusion.

A Core M processsor can run Linux pretty easily, it would be no different than a regular laptop. I am not aure about the modem.

The problem is not the CPU. It is the peripheries and in some cases the BIOS (signed bootloaders and the like).

Linux can run fine and on most modern laptops; plus secure boot can be disabled if it is not supported.

Ok, but without those ugly joysticks and stuff, this would have been a very cool device, even better than the Pocket. But as-is, it's just too ugly and bulky.
