Is there any way to retrieve a WEP key that's been entered into a 770, so that I can use it in another device at that location if I'm not sure I can get access to it from the location?

This should be easy :
Download Gconf-editor (here) and find in the "Configuration Editor" /system/osso/connectivity/IAP/(your network name here) and then in the right panel there should be a wlan_wepkey1 value containing the key.

Code:
gconftool -R /system/osso/connectivity/IAP |grep "name\|passphrase"
Prints out the name and passphrase of all defined access points.
