After a conversation with a helpful nokia person, we found out that windows mobile devices running with a microsoft bluetooth stack try to connect to the sdp service directly after pairing, and if they can not connect to that service they fail to pair.

You can turn on the sdp service by gaining root and typing sdpd to enable the daemon, or edit the bluez-util file to enable this service at boot time, at which point the phone will in fact pair with the 770, but dont break out the champagin yet.

It seems the modem inside of windows mobile devices is very limited and does not understand the complete AT command set, and specificlly a few commands the 770 stick into its chatscript when talking to the phone. so to gain DUN functionality with the device the chatscript has to be found and modified to be more simplistic for this device. However the chatscript for bluetooth is not stored in a file but generated to /var/tmp each time you connect to the connection, and modification of that process is beyond me.

However, for those who are so determined, it would not be all that hard to create by hand a chatscript from those on the web, and start the ppp session from xterm, but you can not use the gui to do this.
