Why is the Media Player app so horribly bad at sorting album tracks?
Here's a prime example: I just added Michael Ian Black's comedy album from eMusic onto the N800. These are already preloaded with ID3v2 values when they are downloaded. I go through the extra step of adding "of X" values, comments, and various other items that only iTunes keeps track of in its library file.
When I copy the files over, they are named with two digits and the title, i.e., "01 File.mp3", "02 File Pt II.mp3", etc.. So even if a player can't read the tags, it should still be able to sort by filename.
Here's the order that Media Player shows this album in:
05, 11, 06, 08, 09, 04, 02, 07, 03, 10, 01
Seriously, *WTF* guys.
Almost every other album I have has similar problems, ranging from totally random to an only slightly smarter 01, 11, 12, 02, 21... pattern. Basically, if it's more than 9 tracks long, it's out of order.
Now before you say anything, I *have* added to a ticket on Maemo.org (so if it's not fixed in OS 2008, I'll probably scream), but really, what's the secret to getting these files ordered properly -- WITHOUT resorting to m3u files?*
*My opinion on requiring m3u: if you can't order an album by tags or names alone, you have failed consumer electronics, and must repeat the course
PS sorry for the rant, but it was pretty painful trying to listen to it in order on the way home. I know the faster answer is use Kagu or something similar, but I found some of the third party stuff too unpolished or too "media center" for my tastes -- a solid player with a standard UI into the OS
