Eh, I'm not gonna sweat $30. I really just wish I had asked a few more questions before creating another 1and1 account (I could have just added a domain name registration). My goof. It may be worthwhile to keep the dreamhost server going for testing purposes.

Video Center work continues. Created a form for entering feeds into the database for users (currently unlinked - needs more error checking). Feeds are added in unapproved status (won't show up in main listing without approval). Reasons for being left in unapproved status: porn, does not play well enough in media player, missing vcfg files.
Coming soon, automatic/correct VCFG file creation after data is submitted to database, RSS feeds for newly added shows, admin approval page.
Edit: VCFG file creation complete.
Edit 2: RSS feed for Video Center is almost complete. Just doesn't open in the tablet's RSS feed reader yet. Most likely a minor change. Interestingly enough, .htaccess didn't help.

I'm not sure how exactly it would fit in with your plans, but you can get free Google Apps for your domain name.
For example, you could provide Gmail-type email accounts (with IMAP) with 4+ GB of storage for each user (@jablet.net or @ldug.org).

If Gmail makes you happy with 4GB and IMAP and everything else, great. You aren't the demographic I'm targetting anyways.
Also, not needing to trust yet another huge external company with stuff like e-mail when I can host it myself is more than worth it to me on a personal level regardless of how many gigabytes they throw at me.
EDIT: On an unrelated note, I'm going to be keeping the various video streams that I've found that do not work on the tablets (everything from G4 so far) in my Video Center database. With OS2008 just around the corner, several of them might suddenly become useable thanks to the improved horsepower/codec support.

the only reason google offer you 12 gagillion gigs of space is because they know most people don't use it anyway. i don't imagine that jablet is going to end up consuming terabytes of email storage (any time soon

I expect tablet-oriented email accounts to be especially small. However, that assumes users won't share accounts between tablet and PC/laptop. Then again, if you're downloading emails, that could get messy on the devices but at least clear up server space. Anyway, I don't expect it to be an issue and if it becomes one that just even more validates zero's vision... and if it's THAT popular one would hope the necessary funds manifested.

I've gotten myself a virtual hosting account thanks to pixel's suggestion and also bought a domain at Dreamhost because the hosting account wanted a domain and they don't sell them. So why not try to complete the set of domains, then? I bought jablet.org... now to harass the owner of jablet.com. 
Anyways, I didn't have much time to work on it yet. I just got Openfire set up and running before I left for work today. Once I've got it set up to my satisfaction and stuff we'll look into moving hosting or whatever. It's not a huge rush or anything. Anyways, jay@jablet.org through Jabber if you need to get a hold of me.
(Looks like DNS propagated enough for my work computer, however not on the wifi connection I use at work. Oh well.)
