I have really enjoyed my N800 except....(1) I expected to use the web cam to video chat with PC users either by Googletalk or Skype. Nothing so far. Very disappointed. Best I can tell the advertised web chat that was so positively reviewed is nothing more than a "video walkie talkie" for two N800s. (2) Expected the webcam to shoot pictures and videos. Very disappointed. (3) Can't run video applications from TV networks like nbc.com. Disappointed. (4) While using the camera last night the screen went from a bunch of colored horizontal lines to blank. Won't come back up, so I figure I will be sending in for a warranty repair. Very sad. (5) No reset button. Other than that, I like it.

Have you tried to take out the battery and wait for 10 minute then re-insert? Just a thought.......

Yes. Thank you for the advice. I left the battery out for several hours to no avail. The tablet turns on, Nokia startup music sounds, backlight is on, but only black screen. No the screen is not broken, btw.

Have you tried pulling the battery, then charging it for a few hours? Sometimes my n800 gets into a state where it doesn't have enough juice to boot. it sounds similar.

BTW, I think most of the things you mentioned will improve over time. I've had my N800 since mid-2007 and I'm amazed by the improvements introduced with each new firmware release. Nokia should be commended for staying on top of things so faithfully, IMO. This next firmware release with it's 400mhz processor upgrade will probably prove to be yet another unexpectedly pleasant leap forward in usability.

Have you tried removing the SD cards, then the battery, then trying to boot it up? (I was having a problem where it wouldn't start and that fixed it, although I hadn't been using the camera before.) Good luck getting your N800 working (or through repair quickly!)

Thank you for the advice. I didn't try to remove the cards and turn on. I sent it off yesterday to Nokia Authorized Repair. I'm a little nervous since when I called the repair number, the Nokia guy (Joe) couldn't understand why I did not have a phone number associated with my "phone". He finally just gave me the address to send it in. So I will report back to the group what happens from here!

Oh, already off and away? That doesn't sound promising... but I'm sure the technicians will know what it is. Good luck!

Did anyone from Nokia ever answer you if the web cam is just a walkie talkie or if is a true web cam? This is my biggest gripe with my n800 because it was the main number one reason I bought it. I travel a lot and was wanting to use it to send web chat messages like they show on their advertisement of the n800 to family while in different area's and places.

well, you already sent it for repair. you should also try to re-flash the os2008 image, just to see if there are any display drivers got damaged.

just a thought
