I haven't even got my n800 yet, but whlle I wait... It occurs to me that a bluetooth keyboard and a way to connect the n800 to a larger screen would make a real "pocket pc" out of it.

Use the normal screen and kb when travelling or in meetings or whatever, but the n800 is your usual PC and when you are sitting at home or your desk at work you can connect it to a screen and kb and ssh around or write things in vi or read slashdot, all the usual sysadmin things.

I haven't seen any way to connect a screen... is there such a thing as a USB screen?

Try using the x11vnc server on the N800 and then VNC into it from a PC.

Desktop VNC viewer: http://www.uvnc.com/

Hmm.... yes, that could work. If you go the other way, and use the N800 to VNC into a desktop, how are the differing resolutions and screen sizes handled?

I still like the idea of a large screen though, with the Nokia just hooked up to something wherever you are.

Google tells me Samsung has a USB LCD but so far no linux drivers. Maybe only a matter of time?

Until then I should consider what I want to have on the n800 and what I want to have on the desktop...

Has anyone ported slrn to the N800? Or Mutt? text based type that I am. Guess I need to hunt down the information on porting things and see if I can recompile them for the N800.

Mutt yes, don't know about slrn, but it'd probably be pretty easy to compile. I've compiled about 10 different console apps, don't think I've had a single problem yet, at least nothing that wasn't easy to fix.

Adammelancon is right. When you get your N800, fool around with those things. You can use a BIG screen and a conventional PC keyboard, and mouse to control ( use ) your N800 at home......heck if you want a REALLY big screen, use an LCD projector on the desktop/laptop (viewer) and your N800 screen image (server) can be several feet tall.

If you insist on using USB to spew N800 screen images you'll have to get your N800 USB port to be HOST and use USB ToGo stuff and buy a USB to VGA converter (there are many of these on the market and they are fairly cheap, like this - http://sewelldirect.com/usb2tosvga.a...FRJgWAodxinaDQ ). I don't know what software you'll need (the thing I linked only has Windows software), but the N800 would need newer firmware to get the USB to be HOST, and more stuff.

A way of using my N800 to do presentations, instead of a laptop or a PC connected to a projector and using a remote control. Would've been better to load up the presentation on the N800 and somehow connect the display to the projector..

That project is a tad empty - no files.

At my University, most classrooms have a digital projector, and a document camera (as well as a computer) rather than a transparency projector. You can put the N800 on the document table, focus and zoom the camera to catch the display, then project anything onto the big screen while controlling the N800 with BT keyboard. Where anything = Quake in my case, but you could do PDF presentations with eVince.

Ah well, that's certainly one way to do it!
But for my presentations I would like to stand up and walk around a bit, with the N800 in my hand.

Control & view n8x0 on PC:

On n8x0: x11vnc; download link and more info here
On PC: TightVNC [file transfer works flawlessly in both directions from PC as opposed to UltraVNC]
