hi!..wondering if i connected an external preamp and cardioid microphones, what kind of recording quality i would get with my n800??....I currently record with an Archos 402 with the preamp/microphone setup and the quality is good...records in .WAV...so, I'm wondering if the n800 can do the job....if yes, is there any way to control recording levels??....or will the Maemo recorder that's available only allow you to use the internal mic??

I don't know about internal/external mic but the quality of maemo recorder recordings is horrible. I can't imagine that's a hardware limitation but i don't know of any software that allows for decent recordings with the n800...

I know the external mic on the 770 is pretty much reserved for taking notes given the amount of noise on it, and I imagine the N800 would be the same. Would it be possible to use the headphone jack and an external mic? (I know it supports those earbud/mic phone headsets.)

Are you looking for stereo? Because the mic input is mono.

What might be a little more promising is the latest work with USB Host mode in OS2008. In theory you could connect a USB input, if there were ARM drivers that would support it.

Unfortunately, if what's been said in an earlier thread is true, and I've no reason to doubt it, the hardware of the N800 can't do any better than 16 bits/8kHz. Which is awful, and very disappointing. My old Palm T3 could do 16 bits/44kHz (with a 3party application).

So, for recordings of anything but the simplest memos I use my Zoom H4 instead.

It looks like the audio chip can do much better, unless I misunderstand the data sheet, which is quite possible

I think there's two analog inputs? (I don't have the datasheet handy right now), maybe the mic input is limited to mono/8kHz, and line input at stereo/48kHz, perhaps we could tap the line input and record through that somehow.

dblank, I hope you're right! If I could carry around just the N800 for those times when I want a recording a bit better than the almost useless stuff we get now..

I hope so too

and hopefully, if it is possible, it doesn't require soldering to tiny surface mount components! my hands are a little too shaky for that..
