Hi,

From something lon said in the ntp thread, I have this question.

In general, can we just install arm .debs?

If not in general, can we install some?

Some experimentation may be due...

From what I've heard: a good number of the command line apps should work.

From experience with a few (wget for example) You have to unpack them with dpkg -x, and then hunt down any missing dependencies.

FSVO "install". Normal Debian/ARM debs can be unpacked into an appropriate location using dpkg -x somepkg.deb /var/lib/install or - as root - /.

It won't handle dependencies or allow particularly easy uninstall however.

True, using dpkg -x doesn't allow for automatic uninstall, but the .deb still provides a listing of all the files, so it's relatively trivial to write a script to remove the installed files manually.

With all this manual poking around, though, you should always install as user (not root) into /var/lib/install.

You can also use the slackware packages for ARM processors. I'm using them for a lot of commands (true grep, awk, sed, dig, ntp, whois, etc). They all work.

Where are the actual packages on that site? I went looking one time (before I found the debian site) and couldn't find individual packages.
