I includedl alot of drivers in this, not just the cypress_m8
right now you have to use insmod to install the driver install usbserial.ko first.
I have included some startup scripts but I am workng on a better way to load them.

I have succesfully used a magellan explorist 500 and garmin emap in maemomapper and wayfinder mapper in os2008. All it required was the correct modules:
ftdi_sio.ko for the usb2serial I needed for the emap (emap comes with serial cable)
cdc_acm.ko for the explorist.

These devices are selfpowered by their batteries. Even so, I notice a drain on the battery so I really recommend attaching a charger. Off course, I had maemo mapper autodownload maps over bluetooth gprs which probably used quite a bit of power as well.

I had a problem with the latest version of gpsd, because this one did not support usb gpsses, but resorting to an earlier version solved that problem.

FWIW, I found all the cabling and module loading a bit messy, and have in the meanwhile gone back to os2007, so will be buying a bt sirf3 gps anyway, preferably something that has the same batterytype, or a least a compatible charger.

Hi Jalbrizio,

I tried installing your cypress_m8.deb on my n800 (vanilla Chinook install) but I got an error saying incompatible application package.

rittf800,

It looks to me like your method required only one of two modules depending on the GPS. I'm guessing I need cdc_acm.ko. Can you elaborate a bit on the specifics to get it working?

I'm using an i.Trek M7 in USB mode if that makes a difference. Of course, it works fine in Bluetooth mode but I'm trying to achieve a non-RF "Airplane mode".

Thanks

Dornanu

oh wow I'm sorry i Dint reply to the last post. I stopped watching it after a few months.
if any one still wants to use this just send me a pm and I will take a look and see what I can do,
if its the n800 or n810 I should still be able to compile working drivers for them I would just need to get the scratch box up and working again for them. but from what I hear with the n900 there is no usb host mode.
I'll find out when I get it in a few weeks.
The n900 has a built in gps anyway so I don't see why you would need it.

I am brand new to forum, Mobile computing, and GPS. I have a Nokia N800 with OS2008 and a Navicor personal bluetooth GPS receiver. Can someone give me step by step instructions for getting my GPS up and running, including exactly which downloads and setup instructions?
Thank you.

I usually used Maemo Mapper for all my navigation needs. The N800 paired fine with my adapt bluetooth GPS receiver. Just try and see how far you get...

Let's not hijack this thread (which is about USB GPS adapters) and recycle these posts...

To answer your question: If you use repositories to install from, there is only one version available.

1 Test if you can pair with your GPS receiver
- Start your GPS receiver
- Open the 'Control Panel', choose Bluetooth, set Bluetooth on = true, press Devices, press New.
- By now your GPS device should be selectable, select it, press OK and pair with it. If you've gotten this far, you should be able to use it.

2 Install Maemo Mapper.
- Add the Meamo extras repository to the Application Manager (only if you haven't done this before)
- Catalogue name: Maemo extras
- Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
- Components: free non-free
- 'Browse installable applications' and install 'Maemo Mapper'

Thanks for your quick reply. I apologize for my lack of knowledge in this matter. Is there a specific version of Maemo Mapper? What exactly do I need to do?
