I just bought a new Nokia n800 from Buy.com Canada and after charging the battery, the unit refuses to power on. I tried everything - took out the battery for a day, tried several combination of plugging and unplugging the AC... nothing worked. I called Nokia help...they were totally useless, as usual. Really bad customer service from Nokia.

Finally, I returned the n800 to buy.com today.

This seems to be a big issue with some units. You might check the wiki or read up on this thread

I assume you held the power button down for a couple of seconds....

When starting from cold I have to keep the power button pressed for quite some time (until the blue led lights around the D-Pad) before releasing it.
